WHL Roundup: A look at Thursday's games

Rhett Rachinski scored two goals, and the Edmonton Oil Kings beat the Kootenay Ice 3-1 Thursday to complete a four-game sweep of the first-round Western Hockey League playoff series.

Mark Pysyk also scored for Edmonton, which won its first playoff series since the current version of the team started in 2007. Laurent Brossoit made 14 saves.

Drew Czerwonka replied for the Ice, while Nathan Lieuwen stopped 15 shots.

Elsewhere in the WHL, Brandon eliminated Calgary with a 3-2 overtime win, and Portland completed a sweep of Kelowna with a 5-3 victory.

At Cranbrook, B.C., the Oil Kings opened the scoring early in the first period on a power play. Pysyk's point shot was stopped by Lieuwen, but the puck went high in the air and landed near the goal-line before being pushed into the net by the goalie's pad.

The Ice scored their first power-play goal of the series in the second period. Drew Czerwonka coming down the left wing with a wrist shot that beat the goalie of the glove side.

The Oil Kings regained the lead later in the second as Rachinski's attempted pass from the corner went off an Ice player into the net.

Rachinski added an empty net goal to clinch the game and the series.

It?s the third time the Ice have been swept in the first round of the playoffs and the fifth time they have lost four playoff games in a row.

The Ice had 12 players on the roster this season that won the WHL championship last year.

The two home games for the Ice were the smallest crowds in playoff history at the Rec-Plex: 2,293 for Game 3 and 2,146 for Game 4.

At Winnipeg, Paul Ciarelli scored his second goal of the game 8:26 into overtime and Brandon eliminated Calgary in five games.

At Kelowna, B.C., Ty Rattie scored four goals as the Portland completed a four-game sweep of the Rockets.
