Donates $2,500 to animal charity championed by Blues' Backes

San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic is preparing for his first trip to the Stanley Cup Final but found time to tip his cap to a worthy adversary and a worthy cause.

Vlasic made a $2,500 donation to Athletes for Animals, a charity started by St. Louis Blues captain David Backes and his wife, Kelly. The Sharks defeated the Blues in six games in the Western Conference Final.

'ALL ACCESS: Quest for the Stanley Cup' continues

Second episode of Showtime series chronicles end of conference final series

Showtime Sports on Friday aired the second episode of "ALL ACCESS: Quest for the Stanley Cup," which chronicles the Eastern and Western Conference Final series and the Stanley Cup Final. It's the first show to nationally televise the championship of one of the four major North American sports as it unfolds. It is narrated by 2016 Tony Award nominee Bill Camp.

The second episode begins with the Tampa Bay Lightning and captain Steven Stamkos practicing for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Stamkos had surgery to treat a blood clot in April and had not played since March 31.

For additional insight into the Western Conference Final between the San Jose Sharks and St. Louis Blues, NHL.com has enlisted the help of Gary Agnew to break down the action. Agnew will be checking in throughout the series.

Agnew, 55, was an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Blues and Columbus Blue Jackets. He also served as interim coach of the Blue Jackets for five games during the 2006-07 season, and has been coach of Syracuse of the American Hockey League and London and Kingston of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Sharks defeated the St. Louis Blues 5-2 in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final at SAP Center on Wednesday, winning the best-of-7 series 4-2. 

San Jose will face the winner of the Eastern Conference Final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning, which will be decided in Game 7 at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

The final horn sounded, and it was over: the game, the wait. The San Jose Sharks had defeated the St. Louis Blues 5-2 and eliminated them in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final at SAP Center on Wednesday, and they had made the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in their 25-year history.
