Veilleux scores hat trick as Shawinigan Cataractes beat Rimouski Oceanic 5-4 @NHLdotcom

RIMOUSKI, Que. - Yannick Veilleux scored a hat trick to lead the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 5-4 victory over the Rimouski Oceanic in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Sunday.

Shawinigan (5-2-0) dominated the first period and took a 4-0 lead heading into the intermission, but Rimouski's comeback fell just short.

Dale Deon and Peter Sakaris also counted for the Cataractes.

Alex Belzile had a goal and two assists for Rimouski (3-4-0), while Petr Straka, Guillaume Gauthier and Alex Emond rounded out the scoring.

Alex Dubeau made 24 saves for Shawinigan. Jacob Gervais-Chouinard allowed three goals on 12 shots for Rimouski before being pulled late in the first period for Carl Hozjan, who made 18 stops.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Victoriaville 8, Gatineau 0; Rouyn-Noranda 6, Acadie-Bathurst 4; and Quebec 9, Chicoutimi 1.

At Rimouski, Que., Veilleux opened the scoring for Shawinigan midway through the first period.

The Cataractes blew the game wide open though in a 3:05 span late in the period. Veilleux buried his second of the game at the 16:14 mark. Deon made it 3-0 just 34 seconds later and Veilleux completed his hat trick with 40 seconds left in the period and the Cataractes on a power play.

But slowly Rimouski started cutting into the lead. Gauthier scored 6:09 into the second period on a power play and Belzile offered the Oceanic further hope with a late goal making the score 4-2.

Rimouski pulled to within a goal when Emond beat Dubeau with the Oceanic on a power play 30 seconds into the third period.

But Sakaris scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Cataractes just over three minutes later.

Straka pulled a goal back on a power play in the final minute for Rimouski, but they couldn't find the equalizer.

The Oceanic outshot the Cataractes 11-6 in the final period.

Tigres 8, Olympiques 0

At Victoriaville, Que., Yanni Gourde scored a hat trick and added an assist as the Tigres (5-1-0) routed the Olympiques (3-4-0).


Huskies 6, Titan 4

At Bathurst, N.B., Sven Andrighetto scored two goals and added a pair of assists as Rouyn-Noranda (3-3-1) beat Acadie-Bathurst (3-4-1).


Sagueneens 9, Remparts 1

At Chicoutimi, Que., Mikael Tam scored a hat trick, while Martin Lefebvre and Alexandre Comtois each had a goal and three assists as Quebec (3-2-1) hammered the Sagueneens (2-3-2).
