KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Tri-City Americans scored three goals in the third period - two in a span of 25 seconds - to snuff out the Kelowna Rockets 5-3 in the first game of the Western Hockey League semifinals on Friday night.
Adam Hughesman, Sergei Drozd and Johnny Lazo all scored in the third for the Americans, while Tyler Schmidt and Justin Feser tallied in the first period.
Drew Owsley finished with 26 saves for Tri-City, which saw Brendan Shinnimin hand out two assists.
Geordie Wudrick, Lucas Bloodoff and Brandon McMillan replied for Kelowna, which pulled within 4-3 with five minutes left in the game. Mark Guggenberger finished with 38 saves.
The Americans will host Game 2 at their home rink in Kennwick, Wash. on Saturday night.
