Thomas scores OT winner as Generals beat Sarnia 5-4 in season opener

SARNIA, Ont. - Christian Thomas scored 22 seconds into overtime as the Oshawa Generals edged the Sarnia Sting 5-4 to open their Ontario Hockey League season on Friday night.

Thomas, one of the players acquired by Oshawa in the trade that sent NHL 2009 first-overall draft pick John Tavares to the London Knights, also assisted on Jeff Brown's second-period goal.

Brown added two assists for the Generals (1-0-0), while Jeff Hayes scored twice and rookie Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist.

Ron Soucie, Nathan Chiarlitti, Ben O'Quinn and rookie Tyler Peters replied for Saria (0-0-1).

Michael Zador made 30 saves for Oshawa, while Sting netminder Shayne Campbell stopped 29 shots.
