Of the 32 minority players on starting rosters, 16 are black (a 23 % increase from the 2007-08 season, the largest increase since the 2002-03 season), 7 are Native/Aboriginal, 4 are Asian, 3 are Hispanic, 1 is Inuit, and 1 is South Asian/Indian.

Of the 17 remaining minorities "in the system"*, 13 are black (a 62% increase from the 2007-08 season), 3 are Asian, and 1 is Native/Aboriginal.

55% of minority players that were "in the system" during the 2007-08 season have secured a permanent roster spot for the 2008-09 season.

* "In the system" refers to players that have been signed by an NHL club, but are currently playing at the minor pro or major junior league level (AHL, CHL, ECHL, etc). There is a significant chance that these players will be called up periodically throughout the season to participate in a regular-season NHL game.
