Talbot starts, Rangers' Lundqvist eyes Monday return

by Staff /

Two nights after making his first NHL start, goaltender Cam Talbot will return to the New York Rangers' net Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Talbot stopped 25 of 27 shots Thursday night against the Philadelphia Flyers, but came up on the short end of a 2-1 loss that dropped New York's record to 2-6-0. With the Rangers playing the final contest in a nine-game road trip to start the 2013-14 season, Talbot is looking forward to getting back in the crease.

"To get two games in three days gives me a little bit of a rhythm," Talbot said after practice Saturday. "[Helps me] give these guys a chance to win."

Talbot wasn't the only Rangers goaltender getting plenty of attention at the skate on Saturday. Henrik Lundqvist, who missed the contest Thursday with an undisclosed injury, skated alongside Talbot and backup Jason Missiaen. Lundqvist will again be out Saturday night in Detroit, but he has every intention of suiting up for the team's home-opener Monday against the Montreal Canadiens.

"I definitely want to play Monday," Lundqvist said. "The home opener, play in front of our fans, that's my goal."

If Lundqvist returns to the Rangers on Monday, it should be a special night at Madison Square Garden, which recently completed a top-to-bottom renovation that took place over three years and cost $1 billion.

Up front, forward Mats Zuccarello returns to the lineup after being a healthy scratch in Philadelphia. Brandon Mashinter and Justin Falk will sit as healthy scratches.

The Red Wings lineup should remain unchanged from their 6-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, although Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk will be split up to try and provide greater balance up front. Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson skated before practice on Saturday, but he remains out at least two weeks with a shoulder injury.
