Sudbury defeats Finnish team in Junior Cup opener

by Nick Baptiste

Its Game Day in Omsk!

All of the guys were really excited to get things going at the Junior Club World Cup with our first game against HIFK of Finland. We woke up early for an 8 a.m. breakfast at the hotel. Afterwards, we left for the rink and our morning skate.

All of the Wolves went on the ice for 40 minutes. After leaving the rink we went to a large grocery store that had lots of North American food, it reminds us of home!

We got back to the hotel for our pre-game meal and then had a nap for a couple of hours. Some of the guys are having a tough time sleeping with the 11 hour time difference.

At 4:45 p.m., everyone got on the team bus at the hotel for the ride over to the rink.

We played a rough first five minutes. It took a while to get everyone going, I was able to pick up an assist as Jacob Harris scored the opening goal of the game.

After that we finished out a tough first period with a 3-1 lead, our goalie Joel Vienneau made a couple of great saves to keep us in front. We played much better in the second period, taking control of the game and grabbing a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period, we tried to keep to our team system and not allow any bad habits to creep into our game. We were able to finish out the game well and won, 9-1. It was a great team effort and really positive way to start the tournament!

We have a quick turnaround as we are back at the rink [Sunday] for a 3 p.m. game against Riga of Latvia! Check back tomorrow night and I will update the blog with our result! Thanks for following!
