John Tavares wasn't about to be held off the scoresheet for a second straight night.

Tavares's league-leading 40th goal of the season with 13:31 left in the third period lifted the London Knights to a 3-2 victory over the Belleville Bulls on Saturday night in a battle of OHL division leaders.

Tavares added an assist on Phil Varone's power-play goal earlier in the third period, giving him 14 goals and eight assists in nine games since joining the Knights in a blockbuster trade with the Oshawa Generals at the OHL trade deadline.

Tavares had been held without a point in London's 3-2 loss to the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday. The Oakville, Ont., native leads the OHL in scoring with 76 points, seven ahead of Belleville's Eric Tangradi, who scored his 31st goal for the Bulls on Saturday.

In other OHL action Saturday, it was: Erie 5 Guelph 2; Brampton 5 Peterborough 1; Mississauga 7 Plymouth 4; Saginaw 5 Sault Ste. Marie 2; Niagara 4 Barrie 3; and Sudbury at Owen Sound.

At Belleville, Ont., Varone finished with a pair of goals to pace the Knights (37-11-0-2), while Daryl Borden preserved the win with a 32-save performance.

Nick Palmeiri added a goal for the Bulls (34-14-2-2), who saw their season-high eight-game winning streak come to an end.

Mike Murphy stopped 30 shots in defeat for Belleville.

Otters 5 Storm 2

At Erie, Pa., Andrew Yogan broke a 2-2 tie with just under six minutes remaining as the Otters beat Guelph.

Ryan O'Reilly, Mike Cazzola, Zack Torquato and Luke Gazdic scored for Erie (26-23-2-0), which has won three in a row.

Peter Holland and Ryan Baldwin found the net for the Storm (27-18-2-3).


Battalion 5 Petes 1

At Peterborough, Ont., Cody Hodgson had two short-handed goals and two assists to lead Brampton past the Petes.

Jason Dale and Kenny Peroff had a goal and assist each for the Battalion (33-14-1-1), winners of nine straight games, while Matt Duchene also scored. Hodgson's first short-handed goal 7:55 into the third period sparked a four-goal outburst and proved to be the winner.

Ryan Spooner had the lone goal for Peterborough (20-30-0-2), losers of three in a row.


Majors 7 Whalers 4

At Plymouth, Mich., Jared Gomes scored three goals and added two assists as Mississauga downed the Whalers.

The Majors (26-21-1-2) also had two goals from Ryan Lopes, while Jesse Messier and Kale Kerbashian added singles.

Plymouth (24-22-5-0) had two goals from Ryan Hayes, while Tyler Seguin and Michal Jordan each had a goal and an assist.


Spirit 5 Greyhounds 2

At Saginaw, Mich., Kyle Bochek scored twice to help the Spirit hand Sault Ste. Marie its seventh straight loss.

T.J. Brodie had a goal and two assists, Jack Combs scored and added an assist, and Daniel Pachis also scored for Saginaw (29-17-0-3).

James Livingston and Kyle DeCoste replied for the Greyhounds (16-31-2-1).


IceDogs 4 Colts 3

At Barrie, Ont., Drew Schiestel's goal with 5:47 left in regulation capped a four-goal third period for Niagara in a come-from-behind win over the Colts.

Trailing 3-0 with less than 14 minutes remaining, the IceDogs (21-21-4-5) got a pair of goals from Chris DeSousa, the second of which tied the score with 7:09 left. Zac Jones added a goal and an assist for his first career OHL points.

Alex Hutchings, Darren Archibald and Ryan Gottschalk scored for Barrie (21-26-3-1), which lost despite outshooting the IceDogs 48-32.


Attack 9 Wolves 4

At Owen Sound, Ont., Garrett Wilson scored three goals and added an assist as the Attack scored five straight goals in the third period to down Sudbury.

Joey Hishon had a goal and four assists, Marcus Caroll and Mike Lomas had a goal and an assist each, while Keevin Cutting, David Kolomatis and Joe Vanni added goals for Owen Sound (20-19-6-5), which is on a four-game winning streak.

Matt Dias and Akim Aliu both scored twice for the Wolves (21-23-2-4).

The start of the game was delayed until 9:10 ET due to problems with Sudbury's bus.
