BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -The Buffalo Sabres reassigned rookie forward Nathan Gerbe to their AHL team in Portland on Wednesday, clearing the way for center Paul Gaustad to make his return from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him the past six games.
The 5-foot-6 Gerbe was on his second stint with the Sabres, but has been unable to provide much offense. In 10 games, he's picked up just one assist.
Gaustad was hurt in a game against Toronto on Feb. 4. His return will bolster the power play, where he gives the Sabres a big body in front of the net.
The Sabres (30-22-6), who play Philadelphia on Thursday, have 66 points, tying them with Montreal, Florida, and the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference. They currently sit sixth based on tiebreakers.
