ANAHEIM -- Confidence plays a huge part in the ability to score goals in the NHL, especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Often, you have to believe you can score before it actually happens. On the other hand, doubt can be kryptonite to a goal-scorer. An inkling of apprehension can be the difference between finding and not finding the tiny openings provided by NHL goalies.

ANAHEIM -- The Nashville Predators defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round at Honda Center on Friday.

What we learned: These teams are more evenly matched than many believed. The wild-card Predators finished seven points behind the Pacific Division champion Ducks, but each team was playing great hockey entering the postseason. Despite being on the road, Nashville carried the play for long stretches and played a near-perfect game, bottling up the Anaheim attack. Also, teams from different divisions can build a rivalry quickly. These teams had not played each other since Nov. 17, but it did not take long for the rancor to reach fever pitch.

Third-period goal helps Nashville get past Anaheim

ANAHEIM -- Filip Forsberg has scored plenty of pretty goals in his young NHL career.

His third-period goal Friday in Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round wasn't one of them, but it lifted the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center.

Neal scores 35 seconds into Game 1

Nashville Predators forward James Neal scored 35 seconds into the first period of Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round series against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday.

Center Ryan Johansen had the assist. It was Neal's fifth goal in his past four Stanley Cup Playoff games.
