Red Wings' Howard leaves game with injury

by Paul Harris

DETROIT Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard left the game after the first period against the New York Islanders on Friday as a precaution because of a lower-body injury, the Red Wings announced.

Howard stopped eight of nine shots in the first period of a 1-1 game before goalie Petr Mrazek relieved him.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock would only say Howard is injured and didn't give a time frame on how long he might be out. The Red Wings website described Howard as day-to-day.

Detroit lost 2-1.
