Rangers sign Kennedy
by Dan RosenTim Kennedy won't have to leave New York to continue his burgeoning career in the NHL. The former Buffalo Sabre is heading south to the Big Apple and will join the Rangers on a reported one-year, one-way contract worth $550,000.
After scoring 26 points in 78 games as a rookie last season, Kennedy was awarded $1 million for a one-year deal in an arbitration hearing earlier this summer. The Sabres decided to buy out that contract and let the 24-year-old Buffalo native become an unrestricted free agent.
Kennedy scored 10 goals and added 16 assists in his rookie season, and he could find himself in the mix at the center position, according to a report in The Bergen Record.
Without Kennedy, the Rangers lineup down the middle included Vinny Prospal, Todd White, Artem Anisimov, Eric Christensen, Chris Drury and Brian Boyle. Kennedy could also play on the left wing, but the Rangers already have Alex Frolov, Sean Avery, Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Boogaard penciled in there. Kennedy played left wing in Buffalo.
The Rangers' summer is not over as the team still has to sign defenseman Marc Staal to a new contract. Staal is a restricted free agent and GM Glen Sather said he would match any offer sheet the 23-year-old blue-liner receives.
