Rangers, Girardi agree on contract extension

The New York Rangers and defenseman Dan Girardi have agreed to a contract extension, the team announced Friday.

Terms were not disclosed, but TSN's Darren Dreger reported it's for six years and $33 million. ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reported the contract includes a full no-movement clause in the first three years and a modified no-trade clause in the final three.

"Dan has been a Ranger for his entire career, signing with us as an undrafted free agent and working his way to become a top defenseman in the NHL," Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said in a statement. "His dedication to this club, as a leader both on the ice and in the locker room, is invaluable to this team. We are happy to have been able to ensure that he will continue to wear the Blueshirt."

Girardi, a subject of rumors with the NHL Trade Deadline approaching at 3 p.m. ET Wednesday, has four goals and 17 points in 60 games this season. He leads the Rangers and is 14th in the League with 121 blocked shots.

He has played 548 regular-season games, all with the Rangers, and has 35 goals and 171 points. He has five goals and 19 points in 64 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
