Preseason roundup: Penguins win Crosby's debut @NHLdotcom

Sidney Crosby made his preseason debut, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 2-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday.

Blake Comeau and Oskar Sundqvist scored for Pittsburgh; Nick Spaling had two assists.

Crosby played 18:47 with seven shots on goal after missing the start of the preseason with a minor injury then two games while attending his grandmother's funeral. It was his first game since May 13.

"It felt like, for not playing in some games, it felt pretty good throughout the game," Crosby told the Penguins website. "I got the one under my belt; we'll get ready for the season now."

Pittsburgh next plays in its regular-season opener, Oct. 9 at home against the Anaheim Ducks. The Penguins finished the preseason 3-3-0.

Jimmy Howard made 31 saves for Detroit.

Sabres 6, Capitals 1: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Matt Moulson scored twice, and Tyler Ennis had a goal and two assists for the Buffalo Sabres in a 6-1 preseason win against the Washington Capitals at First Niagara Center on Wednesday.

Sam Reinhart, the second pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, scored for Buffalo, along with Drew Stafford and Marcus Foligno. Jhonas Enroth made 22 saves.

Jason Chimera scored a third-period goal for Washington. Braden Holtby stopped 17 of 22 shots, and Philipp Grubauer made seven saves.

Blue Jackets 6, Hurricanes 3: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Matt Calvert scored twice and had an assist in the Columbus Blue Jackets' preseason win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Nationwide Arena.

Columbus is 6-1-0 this preseason, having outscored opponents 25-15.

Marko Dano (two), Michael Chaput and Artem Anisimov scored for the Blue Jackets in the third-period to break a 2-2 tie. Alexander Wennberg and Dalton Prout each had two assists, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves.

Victor Rask scored twice, and Michal Jordan had one goal for Carolina. Anton Khudobin, competing with Cam Ward to be the Hurricanes' No. 1 goalie, allowed five goals on 31 shots.

The Blue Jackets learned that forward Boone Jenner would be out about five weeks with a hand injury.

Canadiens 3, Blackhawks 1: Carey Price made 31 saves to help the Montreal Canadiens to a preseason win against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center.

The game was scoreless through two periods, but Rene Bourque and Nathan Beaulieu scored 1:54 apart early in the third for Montreal. The Canadiens were outshot 14-5 in the second.

Canadiens left wing Michael Bournival scored an empty-net goal at 19:01.

Andrew Shaw broke Price's shutout with 5:53 remaining. Antti Raanta stopped 16 of 18 shots for Chicago.

The Blackhawks went 0-for-4 on the power play and are 0-for-17 this preseason.

Oilers 3, Coyotes 2: Jesse Joensuu scored two goals to help the Edmonton Oilers to a preseason win against the Arizona Coyotes at Rexall Place.

Benoit Pouliot also scored for the Oilers, and Steven Pinizzotto had two assists. Ben Scrivens stopped 23 of 25 shots.

Mikkel Boedker and Rob Klinkhammer scored for Arizona. Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves.

Edmonton forward David Perron left the game after sustaining an injury to his ribs.
