Portland drops Prince George 3-1; cuts Cougars from playoff picture

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - With a 3-1 effort the Portland Winterhawks officially knocked the Prince George Cougars out of the Western Hockey League playoffs Saturday night.

Chris Francis opened scoring for Portland (37-20-3) while Stefan Schneider and Ryan Johansen also tallied. Ian Curtis stopped 30 shots.

Parker Stanfield was the lone scorer for Prince George (11-43-3). Hudson Stremmel made 33 saves.

Schneider netted the winner when he hopped on a rebound at the tail end of a 3-on-1 rush. Johansen scored the insurance marker in the final minute of the third.

The Winterhawks are chasing the Tri-City Americans for first place in the U.S. Division. The last-overall Cougars can no longer catch the Chilliwack Bruins for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Winterhawks out-shot the Cougars 36-31. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.
