PLYMOUTH, MI. - Ryan Hayes scored with less than three minutes remaining as the Plymouth Whalers edged the Niagara IceDogs 5-4 in a see-saw Ontario Hockey League affair at the Compuware Arena on Friday night.

Plymouth (4-5-1-0), who won on home ice for the first time in four tries this season, held a two-goal lead late in the third period before the IceDogs scored twice in a 26-second span to tie the game.

But Hayes responded less than a minute later, at 17:12, taking a feed from Vern Cooper to the right of Niagara goalie John Cullen and beating him with a quick shot on the short side.

Chris Terry paced the Whalers with a hat trick and an assist, while Cooper netted a goal and a pair of helpers.

Niagara (3-5-1-3) got a pair of goals from Chris DeSousa, with Marco Insam and Dylan MacEachern adding singles.

Jeremy Smith stopped 34 shots in the victory, while IceDog goalie Cullen finished with 27 saves.
