Phil Varone stars in Rochester Americans 3-2 shootout win over Toronto Marlies @NHLdotcom

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Phil Varone was the lone scorer in the shootout as the Rochester Americans edged the Toronto Marlies 3-2 on Sunday in American Hockey League action.

T.J. Brennan and Mark Voakes scored in regulation time for Rochester (28-22-9), while David Leggio made 33 saves and turned aside five shootout attempts for the win.

Nazem Kadri and Philippe Dupuis both scored in the second period for Toronto (32-20-7). Jussi Rynnas stopped 18 shots and three skaters in the shootout.

Brennan's goal was the only one the Americans scored on four power plays, while the Marlies couldn't capitalize on their two man advantages.

Rochester tied the score at 2-2 in the third period, as Voakes finished off a slick feed from Travis Turnbull.

Voakes accepted the pass in the low slot and quickly one-touched it under the arm of Rynnas for his eighth of the season.
