Forward Alex Ovechkin will play for Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk, Belarus, the Washington Capitals announced Tuesday.

The tournament begins May 9 and ends May 25.

Ovechkin will be Russia's captain. It is his 10th World Championship appearance; the Moscow native has 46 points (27 goals) in 56 games and won a gold medal with Russia in 2008 and 2012.

Ovechkin scored 51 goals this season to win his second consecutive and fourth career Rocket Richard Trophy. It was his fifth 50-goal season in the NHL.

Ovechkin has represented Russia in three Olympics (2006, 2010, 2014), three World Junior Championships (2003, 2004, 2005), nine World Championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), and the World Cup of Hockey (2004).

Ovechkin will be joined by Capitals teammates forward Evgeny Kuznetsov and defenseman Dmitry Orlov, the team said.

Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and forward Artem Anisimov also will play for Russia, their NHL team announced Tuesday. Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin and forward Andrei Loktionov also are on the Russian team.
