NHL suspends Islanders' Pascal Morency indefinitely

The National Hockey League on Friday suspended New York Islanders rookie forward Pascal Morency indefinitely for jumping off the bench to fight Calgary's Dion Phaneuf during the Flames' 5-4 win on Thursday night. He will be ineligible to play until a hearing is held; the League did not announce a date.

Morency jumped off the bench and charged after Phaneuf after the Calgary defenseman flattened teammate Kyle Okposo with an open-ice check in the neutral zone at 5:35 of the second period. Morency, a 27-year-old who has never played an NHL game and spent the last two seasons with the Islanders' AHL affiliate in Bridgeport, received a double minor for roughing and a game misconduct under Rule 70 for leaving the players' bench for the purpose of starting an altercation.

Okposo, the Islanders' leading goal-scorer last season, was taken off the ice with a mild concussion.
