Fans of NHL legend Mark Messier
will be able to celebrate his 50th birthday with a special set of programming Tuesday on NHL Network commemorating some of his career highlights.
Two of Messier's six Stanley Cup championships will be highlighted in "Classic Series: 1987 Oilers vs. Flyers" and "Classic Series: 1994 Rangers vs. Canucks." Messier helped Edmonton to a sweep of Philadelphia and New York to end a 54-year Cup drought in a seven-game epic against Vancouver. Those programs air at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
At 6 p.m. is a 30-minute look at Messier in "Frozen in Time: Mark Messier
" followed by "Frozen in Time: New York Rangers
Moments of the 1990's." The Messier tribute finishes up at 7 p.m. with an hour on the 2009 Lester Patrick
Trophy, an award he shared with former Rangers goaltender Mike Richter
Messier finished his career with 1,887 points -- second only to former teammate Wayne Gretzky
in League history. He was renowned as one of the great leaders in the history of sports and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
