DETROIT - Andreas Athanasiou scored 4:06 into the third period and Petr Mrazek had 38 saves, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 1-0 win over the Washington Capitals.

Athanasiou scored his first career goal in his second NHL game from an improbable angle. He shot from the goal line near the left corner, getting the puck between goaltender Braden Holtby and the left post.

Holtby had 26 saves for the Capitals.

The Red Wings have won four of their last five games despite scoring two or fewer goals in three of those victories.

RANGERS 3, HURRICANES 0

NEW YORK (AP) ? Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves for his first shutout this season and 56th of his career, leading the Rangers to a win over the Hurricanes.

Jesper Fast, Rick Nash and Ryan McDonagh scored for New York, which improved to 11-2-2 with its sixth straight win. The Rangers improved to 17-1-0 against Carolina since Feb. 22, 2011.

Fast and Nash scored 11 seconds apart in the first to give the Rangers the lead even though Carolina controlled play for much of the period.

Cam Ward stopped 20 shots for the Hurricanes, who fell to 6-9-0.

SABRES 4, LIGHTNING 1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ??? Rookie Jack Eichel had a goal and an assist to help the Sabres beat the Lightning.

Buffalo also got goals from Cody Franson, Marcus Foligno and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Sabres captured the final game of the season series after they were outscored 10-3 in three earlier losses to Tampa Bay.

Sabres goalie Chad Johnson made a full-out diving save across the crease to take a goal away from Nikita Kucherov in the second.

Steven Stamkos scored his eighth goal this season for the Lightning, who have lost seven of nine (2-6-1).

BLUES 2, DEVILS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ??? Jake Allen made 24 saves for his second straight shutout, Martin Havlat scored against his former team and the Blues beat the Devils.

Allen, coming off a career-high 45 saves in a 4-0 win Saturday over Nashville, had an easier time against New Jersey. It was his third shutout this season and the eighth of his career.

Magnus Paajarvi added a goal in the third period, and the Blues won for the sixth time in seven games.

Cory Schneider stopped 26 shots for New Jersey, which was 8-2 in its previous 10 overall.

CANUCKS 5, BLUE JACKETS 3

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ??? Brandon Sutter scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:08 remaining, and Jannik Hansen had a career high four points with a goal and three assists, to lift the Canucks to a victory over the Blue Jackets.

Henrik Sedin had two goals and an assist and Daniel Sedin added a goal and three assists to help the Canucks snap a three-game losing streak. Jacob Markstrom, out since Oct. 9 with a hamstring injury, stopped 42 shots in his season debut.

Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist, and Jack Johnson and Cam Atkinson also scored for the Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky had 25 saves in coach John Tortorella's first game against his former team.

PANTHERS 4, FLAMES 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) ??? Jaromir Jagr scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and the Panthers beat the Flames to snap a five-game losing streak.

Aaron Ekblad, Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Panthers. Roberto Luongo made 25 saves.

David Jones scored twice for Calgary, which lost for the first time in three games. Sean Monahan had a goal, and Karri Ramo stopped 25 shots.

AVALANCHE 4, FLYERS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ????????? Matt Duchene scored twice and Reto Berra made 25 saves to help the Avalanche start a seven-game road trip with a victory over the Flyers.

Jarome Iginla and Cody McLeod also scored for the Avalanche, who won for just the second time in their last six games.

Philadelphia has just one victory in its last eight games.

Flyers backup goalie Michal Neuvirth got the start for the fourth straight game as coach Dave Hakstol chose to go with him rather No. 1 goalie Steve Mason. Neuvirth, who finished with 36 saves, entered tied for first in the league with a .945 save percentage to go with three shutouts and a 1.81 goals-against average.

WILD 5, JETS 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ????????? Thomas Vanek scored twice during a four-goal frenzy in the second period by the Wild on their way to a victory over the Jets.

Nino Niederreiter scored first for Minnesota, and Erik Haula and Chris Porter supplemented Vanek's outburst with goals in the second period as Winnipeg pulled goalie Ondrej Pavelec after falling behind by three. Pavelec stopped only eight of the 12 shots on net against him.

Bryan Little scored twice and Blake Wheeler added a power-play goal to stop a special-teams skid.

Devan Dubnyk made 25 saves for his NHL-leading ninth victory for the Wild, who improved to 7-1 at home.

PREDATORS 7, SENATORS 5

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ????????? Colton Sissons had a goal and two assists only hours after getting called up from the minors, leading the Predators over the Senators.

Shea Weber, Roman Josi, Austin Watson, Mattias Ekholm, Barret Jackman and Gabriel Bourque also scored for Nashville.

Sissons was recalled Tuesday from Milwaukee of the AHL and played his first NHL game of the season. Ryan Ellis and Seth Jones each posted a pair of assists for Nashville.

Zack Smith scored twice and Milan Michalek, Erik Karlsson and Curtis Lazar also had goals for the Senators.
