PITTSBURGH (AP) -Alex Ovechkin scored twice and the streaking Washington Capitals scored the final four goals to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 on Thursday night in the first game this season between two of the NHL's elite teams.
Tomas Fleischmann scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and set up Nicklas Backstrom's breakaway goal less than a minute later for Washington, which won its fifth in a row and eighth in nine games and improved to 4-0-1 against Pittsburgh during the last two seasons, although the Penguins won in the playoffs.
Eric Fehr and Mike Knuble also scored for the Capitals as Washington came back from deficits of 1-0 and 3-2 despite Sidney Crosby's goal, a revived Evgeni Malkin's three assists and rookie Nick Johnson's goal in his first NHL game.
Kris Letang also scored for Pittsburgh.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ray Emery made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season, and James van Riemsdyk and Mike Richards scored for Philadelphia.
The resurgent Flyers are 10-3-1 in their last 14 games. The Rangers have been shutout three times in the last six games.
The second period featured three fights, with Flyers enforcer Dan Carcillo flooring Rangers star Marian Gaborik with a hard uppercut.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Drew Miller scored his first career shootout goal in the eighth round and Detroit survived Minnesota's third-period rally.
Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard stopped six shots in the shootout and denied Eric Belanger in the eighth round to set up Miller's winner. Miller beat Niklas Backstrom, who entered the game after the first period in place of injured starter Josh Harding.
Miller, Patrick Eaves and Todd Bertuzzi scored in regulation for Detroit.
The Wild overcame a 3-1 deficit with third-period goals from Martin Havlat and Andrew Brunette. Robbie Earl also scored for Minnesota.
ATLANTA (AP) - Eric Staal scored three goals in his first game since becoming Carolina's captain, and Cam Ward stopped 32 shots to tie Arturs Irbe's franchise record with 130 career victories.
Jussi Jokinen and Sergei Samsonov also scored for Carolina. Rich Peverley and Colby Armstrong scored for Atlanta.
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Matt Moulson scored the decisive goal in a shootout to give New York its straight victory at Nassau Coliseum.
Rob Schremp also beat Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun in the shootout, while Dwayne Roloson turned away both Florida attempts.
Blake Comeau scored in regulation for New York. The Islanders have won seven of their last nine and are 10-3-1 in their last 14. Nathan Horton scored for Florida.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Martin St. Louis scored a power-play goal with 9.8 seconds left in overtime to lift Tampa Bay past Toronto.
Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists, and Ryan Malone also scored for Tampa Bay. Ian White and Matt Stajan scored for Toronto, 2-11 in its last 13 road games.
OTTAWA (AP) - Peter Regin had a goal and two assists - all on the power play - to help Ottawa extend its winning streak to five.
Chris Phillips and Milan Michalek also scored, and Brian Elliott stopped 27 shots for Ottawa. Brad Boyes and Eric Brewer scored for St. Louis.
BOSTON (AP) - R.J. Umberger tipped in Anton Stralman's power-play slap shot with 1:16 remaining to give Columbus the comeback victory.
