KENNEWICK, Wash. - Kurtis Mucha earned his first win of the season Friday, stopping 31 shots by the Tri-City Americans to back the Portland Winter Hawks to a 4-1 victory in Western Hockey League action Friday night.
Playing their first game under new coach Mike Johnston, the Winter Hawks scored three goals in the third. Portland, which had won just once in its last 10 games, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris Francis 29 seconds into the second period.
Radim Valchar, Riley Boychuk and Colin Reddin also scored for the Winter Hawks (3-12-0-0).
Jason Reese tied the score late in the second for Tri-City (10-5-0-1), but that was all that got past Mucha.
Americans goaltender Chet Pickard, playing his 14th straight game, finished with 20 saves.
