ERIE, Pa. - Greg McKegg scored twice and added an assist as the Erie Otters eked out a 4-3 win over the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night.
Anthony Luciani and Zack Torquato also scored for Erie (25-22-7), while Adam Courchaine made 30 saves for the win.
Michael Sgarbossa had a pair of goals for Saginaw (25-22-5), while Jordan Skellett added a single. Goaltender Edward Pasquale stopped 25 shots.
The Otters moved two points ahead of the Spirit in the standings with the win. Erie has 57 points following their fourth straight home win and eighth in the past nine outings.
Luciani opened the scoring 54 seconds into the first period - only his second goal in the past 11 games. Then McKegg took over the period and the team's goal-scoring lead.
He took David Shields' pinpoint breakout pass and beat the Spirit's Pasquale for a short-handed goal at the 7:32 mark. He added an even-strength goal - his 28th of the season - with 2:51 left in the period for a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. The Otters scored all three goals on 13 shots.
Courchaine was on top of his game. He made several key saves to keep the normally high-scoring Spirit off the scoreboard. He made 14 saves in the first period and added nine more in the middle period.
Torquato converted a 2-on-1 with McKegg into his 26th goal of the season 4:41 into the third period. Derek Holden also assisted on the goal, which handed the Otters a 4-0 lead.
The Spirit finally ended Courchaine's bid at his sixth career shutout. Sgarbossa fired a rebound of Josh Shalla's shot with 10:24 left in regulation.
Skellett, a former Otter, scored on the power play with 3:36 left, as his deflected shot bounced off Courchaine's glove and floated into the net. Josh Shalla assisted on the goal - his second of the night.
The Spirit made it interesting in the final seconds, as Sgarbossa scored his second goal with 5.4 seconds left.
