PITTSBURGH -- Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang will play for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres after sitting out with various ailments.
Malkin has not played since April 11 with an upper-body injury. Letang, who has had multiple injuries this season, missed the gmae Monday against the Ottawa Senators with food poisoning.
In the midst of a stretch of three games in four days and having played on the road Monday night, the Penguins canceled their morning skate Tuesday in advance of Tuesday's game.
Coach Dan Bylsma addressed the media approximately two hours before the 7:38 p.m. opening faceoff and provided updates on other injured players were out of the lineup for Monday's 3-1 win against the Senators.
Sidney Crosby, James Neal and Paul Martin will not return to game action Tuesday.
Dustin Jeffrey took Beau Bennett's place in Ottawa and scored the game's first goal. If Bennett plays, it might be Joe Vitale who is scratched instead, unless Bylsma elects to rest one of the Penguins' other regulars now that the team has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh is three points behind the Chicago Blackhawks in the race for the Presidents' Trophy with three games to play.
Crosby, despite missing the past nine games, still leads the NHL scoring race by one point over the Tampa Bay Lightning's Martin St. Louis. There had been some hope Crosby might be able to return from his broken jaw by the end of the regular season but he has not taken part in practices yet. He is skating on his own, like Martin (broken hand). Neal has practiced with teammates sparingly in recent days.
For Buffalo, 18-year-old rookie Mikhail Grigorenko, the team's first-round pick in last year's NHL Draft, will play for the second consecutive game after his season ended with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Ryan Miller will be in goal for the Sabres.
Some Penguins players skated informally Tuesday morning.
