RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Peter Laviolette is out and Paul Maurice is in - again - as coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes on Wednesday fired Laviolette and put Maurice, the winningest coach in franchise history, back behind the bench.
They also moved Hall of Fame player Ron Francis from their front office to be Maurice's associate coach.
Laviolette, who replaced Maurice almost exactly five years earlier, led the team to its only Stanley Cup in 2005-06. Last month, he became the winningest American-born coach in NHL history.
Maurice has a career record of 344-357-137 in 11 seasons with Carolina and Toronto, with 268 wins coming with the Hurricanes before his firing on Dec. 14, 2003.
