Kytnar scores in goal-mouth scramble as Giants edge Rockets 5-4 @NHLdotcom

Milan Kytnar's late goal lifted the Vancouver Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Kelowna Rockets in Western Hockey League action Sunday.

Kytnar's goal ended a see-saw battle in which the Giants (10-3-1-2) had a 2-0 lead and the Rockets (7-6-1-0) owned two one-goal leads.

The teams were playing the second half of a home-and-home that began with a 4-3 overtime victory for the Rockets in Kelowna Saturday night. Both teams were playing their third game in three nights.

Craig Cunningham and JT Barnett each had a goal and an assist for the Giants. Kevin Connauton and James Henry also scored.

Tyson Barrie had a goal and two assists for Kelowna, while Kyle St. Denis had a goal and a helper. Spencer Main and Cody Chikie also scored for the Rockets.

Jamie Tucker made 26 saves in the win.

Chad Ketting stopped 31 shots in taking the loss. It was 18-year-old's WHL debut.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Calgary 2 Seattle 1; Regina 5 Swift Current 2; and Lethbridge 5 Moose Jaw 4.

At Vancouver, the Giants opened the scoring with a goal on the game's first power play. After winning the draw to the point, Neil Manning put the puck on net and Connauton lifted the loose puck past Ketting at 4:38. It was Connauton's sixth of the year.

After a puck was shot over the glass the Giants received a second power play and again made good on it. Barnet threw the puck across to Connauton from the far boards, and then Manning made the slap-pass to Henry at the side of the net, who knocked in the second Giants power play goal before the game was nine minutes old.

The Rockets entered the second period down by two but in just over two minutes they took the lead.

St. Denis got the Rockets on the board when he cut between two defenders and roofed the puck past Tucker at 2:50.

Just 54 seconds later, Barrie walked in from the point and ripped a shot past a Giants defender and beat Tucker right under the crossbar. It was the defenceman's second of the year.

The Rockets took the their first lead of the game when Manning gave the puck away to Chikie, and the 18-year-old speedster went in on a breakaway and scored his fifth of the year at 4:55.

The Giants tied the game with the teams playing four-on-four. Cunningham took a clearing attempt from Brandon Scholten, raced up the ice, and fired a shot over the glove-hand of Ketting.

The Rockets regained the lead on the power play when Main deflected a shot by Antoine Corbin.

Just 41 seconds into the third period the Giants tied it again. Barnett threw the puck on net from the corner and the bad-angle shot.

With the game seemingly going to overtime the Giants regained the lead during a goal-mouth scramble. Brendan Gallagher and Kytnar were jamming at the puck, and the latter finally buried the puck at 16:38.

At Calgary, Michael Stone scored a power-play goal midway through the third period to lead the Calgary over Seattle.

At Lethbridge, Alta., Carter Ashton had two goals and an assist as the Hurricanes came back to defeat Moose Jaw.
