ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Defenseman Travis Hamonic did not skate with the New York Islanders and is not expected to play in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference First Round series against the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center on Friday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports 2, MSG+, CSN-DC).
Islanders coach Jack Capuano said goaltender Jaroslav Halak will start but did not note any other lineup changes. New York defeated Washington 4-1 on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in this best-of-7 series.
Hamonic was injured in New York's penultimate game of the regular season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has not skated with the team since the injury. He led the Islanders in average ice time during the regular season at 21:47 per game, but they were able to limit the Capitals in Game 1 without him.
"The way that our back end played was great, and we're going to need that every game in this series," Islanders forward Kyle Okposo said. "[Hamonic] is obviously a big part of our team, but we have other guys who can step in and do the job. They did that the other night."
Hamonic's ice time is down from 25:00 per game last season. The Islanders' new-found depth on defense, bolstered by the additions of Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk, is a big part of why they have been able to absorb injuries this season and continue to play at a high level.
"Last year we probably didn't have the depth to deal with it, or the year before. But this year we're excited about the team we've got," defenseman Brian Strait said. "On the back end we are a lot deeper so that is really helping us right now. We just our played our game. We had a game plan and we stuck to it. That worked out for us [in Game 1]."
