Hurricanes return Brandon Sutter to Red Deer, trim roster to 25 @NHLdotcom

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes trimmed their roster to 25 on Wednesday, returning first-round pick Brandon Sutter to the juniors and sending goalie Michael Leighton and forward Trevor Gillies to the AHL affiliate in Albany.

Sutter's return to the Western Hockey League was expected. After the Hurricanes made Sutter the 11th overall pick, general manager Jim Rutherford said he expected Sutter to be sent back to the Red Deer Rebels.

Leighton was acquired from Montreal during the second day of the draft in exchange for a seventh-round pick. Gillies was in Anaheim's organization last season before signing as a free agent with Carolina in July.
