Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward named first star of the week @NHL

NEW YORK - Carolina goaltender Cam Ward was named the NHL's first star of the week Monday after helping the Hurricanes to three straight road wins.

Ward had a 1.67 goals-against average and .939 save percentage last week. He made 27 saves in a 7-1 win over Toronto last Tuesday. Two nights later, he stopped 27 shots in a 5-3 victory over Ottawa and on Saturday, Ward made 23 saves in a 3-1 win over Montreal.

In five appearances this season, Ward is 4-0-1 with a 1.79 GAA and .942 save percentage.

Buffalo Sabres defenceman Bryan Campbell was named second star and Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg was named third star.

Campbell had seven points (3-4) in two games last week while Zetterberg recorded seven points (3-4) in four games.

Also Monday, Colorado Avalanche forward Joe Sakic was given the NHL Foundation player award in recognition of his commitment and service to charities in his community.

He will be honoured at a ceremony prior to Tuesday's home game against the Calgary Flames.
