Green, Laich out for Capitals vs. Red Wings

by Adam Vingan

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals will be without the services of both defenseman Mike Green (concussion) and forward Brooks Laich (groin) against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

Green, who has a history of head injuries, awkwardly absorbed a check from Columbus Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner during the first period of Washington's 5-2 loss Thursday. As the two raced for a puck in the Washington zone, Jenner beat Green to the inside, putting the defenseman in a precarious position as he was driven into the boards.

The 28-year-old did not play Friday when the Capitals lost 4-3 to the Red Wings in a shootout, but fully participated in practice Saturday and noticed a considerable difference in how he felt.

"If you've ever had a concussion, you know what it feels like," Green said on Saturday. "You put yourself at risk going back out there if you don't have the reaction time you need. Another bump to the head wouldn't be good, so the protocol and what [the NHL] implemented has really helped. I think the players understand what to look for and how to react, so I'd rather miss a couple games than half a season."

Laich did play on Friday, but his last shift came with 15:42 remaining in the third period when the latest flare-up of his troublesome groin injury kept him on the bench. He will miss his 15th game of the season as a result of the injury.

The Red Wings are expected to deploy the same lineup as Friday. Detroit has been shut out in each of its past three road games, the franchise's longest such streak since 1928.
