Gaynor's first goal of season leads Plymouth to 1-0 Sault Ste. Marie shutout @NHLdotcom

PLYMOUTH, Ma. - Goaltender Jeremy Smith turned aside 26 shots as the Plymouth Whalers shut out the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 1-0 in a Friday afternoon Ontario Hockey League match at the Compuware Arena.

Smith, last June's second-round selection by Nashville in the NHL Draft, notched his third shutout of the campaign, tying Kitchener's Josh Unice for the league lead. Among his saves was a first-period penalty shot attempt by Soo sniper Dustin Jeffrey.

The rare Friday afternoon game was played on the post-U.S. Thanksgiving holiday break, but drew a sparse crowd of 1,922.

Joe Gaynor's first goal of the season early in the second period was the lone shot Plymouth (15-7-1-1) got past Hounds overage netminder Kyle Gajewski, who finished with 35 saves.

Sault Ste. Marie (17-6-1-1) remains atop the OHL West Division standings, two points ahead of Windsor and four in front of Plymouth. The Spits host Peterborough later Friday evening.
