MONTREAL - Former Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau says he is unhappy he was fired and that he didn't see the dismissal coming.
Carbonneau, who was let go by general manager Bob Gainey on March 9, told a news conference in Montreal on Wednesday that he thought the team was heading in the right direction.
Carbonneau, who is celebrating his 49th birthday, says he is proud of his record as Canadiens coach over four years, especially last season when the team finished atop the Eastern Conference.
Carbonneau says he is a Canadiens fan through and through and that he is wishing the team well for the rest of the season.
The Canadiens have one win in four games with Gainey behind the bench.
