Sharks are loaded with talent for 2007-08

Take Bill Guerin, Scott Hannan, Mark Bell and Vesa Toskala off any other NHL team and the chances of still being considered a favorite to challenge for the Stanley Cup are minimal. But the San Jose Sharks are so loaded, so well-stocked from top to bottom, that even after sustaining such personnel losses by trade and via free agency, they still remain one of the elite clubs in the Western Conference.

Despite those losses, the Sharks go into another season with many experts picking them to finally win it all. In that sense, it’s a little bit of been-there, done-that for San Jose, a team that met another premature playoff exit last spring. Three years ago, they made it to the Western Finals, but the last two seasons have ended with disappointing second-round exits.

Last year many people felt the Sharks seemed unstoppable after acquiring Guerin at the deadline, but all their youth, brawn and talent weren’t enough to get past Detroit in the second round. San Jose, big, fast and tough, remains one of the younger teams in the League and their youth is of such quality that they’ll likely get past those summer departures without much struggle. But when it comes to the Sharks the last few years, the true hurdles usually don’t come until playoff time anyway.
