Ex-NHL player Darren McCarty to begin comeback try with Flint Generals @NHLdotcom

FLINT, Mich. - Former NHL forward Darren McCarty, whose hard-working and physical style of play made him a fan favourite in Detroit and Calgary, plans to begin a comeback attempt with the Flint Generals.

The 35-year-old native of Burnaby, B.C., plans to practice with the International Hockey League team on Monday but must be cleared by the NHL before playing, the Generals announced Saturday.

"McCarty is excited to get back in the pro game," the team said.

The Red Wings bought out McCarty's contract in 2005 following a lockout that forced the cancellation of the 2004-2005 season. He was on Detroit's 1997, 1998 and 2002 championship teams and he went on to play for the Flames, but he missed most of 2006-2007 recuperating from a hernia injury. He was not re-signed and became a free agent.
