Eichel, Boston University reach Beanpot title game

by Staff

Boston University freshman Jack Eichel will have a chance to be part of history when his team plays for the Beanpot Tournament championship Feb. 9 at TD Garden in Boston.

Eichel, NHL Central Scouting's No. 2-rated prospect for the 2015 NHL Draft in its midterm rankings, had a game-high 10 shots on goal and was on the ice when linemate Daniel O'Regan (San Jose Sharks) scored the winning goal as the Terriers beat Harvard 4-3 in double overtime in a Beanpot semifinal on Tuesday.

A 6-foot-2, 196-pound center, Eichel has 40 points in 24 games, second among all NCAA players; his 1.67 points-per-game average also is second.

In the Beanpot final Boston University will play Northeastern, which beat Boston College 3-2 in the other semifinal.

Boston College defenseman Noah Hanifin, who is No. 3 on Central Scouting's midterm ranking and No. 1 among defensemen, did not have a point or a shot on goal.

Harvard and Boston College will play in the third-place game Feb. 9. Boston College had won the five previous Beanpot tournaments.
