Ducks fan signs

Angelique Fong was used to cheering on the Anaheim Ducks from the stands at the Honda Center. On Thursday, the team turned things around on her.

Fong, the team's "21st Duck" honoree for this season, was welcomed to center ice with her name up on the scoreboard and, in a surprise twist, Ducks players in the stands.
As Fong approached the carpeted runway on the ice, Ducks players spaced themselves out in the stands, cheered and held up homemade signs featuring her name, the 21st Duck honor, and lots of glitter.
Defenseman Cam Fowler's sign read, "No. 4 is Your No. 1 Fan."
It wasn't the first time the longtime Ducks fan was surprised by the team. When
she was named the 21st Duck
, captain Ryan Getzlaf joined her video call to make the announcement personally.

"First coming around the corner I couldn't quite tell that it was actually the players," Fong said. "So I was thinking maybe it was some of the (Ducks fan group) Orange Alliance or something like that. And I saw the signs and I thought 'Oh my gosh how neat. Those are really, really cool.' And it wasn't until I made it to center ice, again because I was trying to keep an eye on the ice, when I saw (Getzlaf) in the crowd and thought 'Oh my gosh, these are the players.'"
Ducks coach Dallas Eakins welcomed Fong, saying the team was honored to have her. And emotional Fong told her story about surviving breast cancer and her journey of volunteering at the Susan G. Komen Foundation Orange Country branch.
"I got the privledge of going on the Zoom call with her at the very beginning of all this," Getzlaf said. "And just to see her face when she was able to actually come out on the ice. Given our circumstances, it's still great that she was able to go out there and enjoy this with the team."
"It's so sweet because some of the previous 21st Ducks and their family members have reached out to me," Fong said. "It's such an amazing tradition. It's just one of the classiest things that hockey does and that the Ducks do."
