DraftKings daily fantasy value picks for Nov. 21

by Eric Goodman

Each day during the 2015-16 season,'s fantasy staff will identify one player at each position worth owning in DraftKings daily fantasy hockey contests. Based on factors including but not limited to matchups, line combinations, power-play usage, statistical coverage and recent production, we'll provide you with lower-priced options that can help you build a winning lineup.

Players accumulate points in DraftKings for each goal (3 points), assist (2), shot on goal (0.5), blocked shot (0.5) and shootout goal (0.2). Bonuses are given for shorthanded points (1) and hat tricks (1.5). Goalies accumulate points for each win (3) and save (0.2), and lose a point for each goal allowed. Goalie bonuses are given for a shutout (2) where the goalie completes the entire game with no goals allowed in regulation (and overtime, if applicable). Shootout goals will not prevent a shutout, and goalies will receive points for any goals or assists they score in a game. Penalty minutes, hits, plus-minus and PP points DO NOT count in DraftKings. DraftKings lineups must include nine players (2 C, 3 W, 2 D, 1 G, 1 FLEX) and fit within the $50,000 salary cap.

DraftKings price: $5,600

Taking a player who has increased scoring recently makes sense but the downside is that the hot play must eventually come to an end. Considering the busy NHL game night Saturday, it’s tough to pass up on the moderately priced Duchene with his six goals and five assists during a current five-game scoring streak. All the analytics show that Duchene could continue racking up the points at the Washington Capitals with eight goals, five assists and 31 shots on goal in 11 road games this season as well as eight goals, four assists and 30 shots on goal in 10 games played after one day of rest.

Jaromir Jagr, W, Florida Panthers

DraftKings price: $5,500

The seemingly ageless Jagr, 43, remains relevant in all fantasy formats but especially in daily contests. Jagr is currently the Panthers’ scoring and goals leader with 15 points and eight goals (tied with Vincent Trocheck) in 17 games this season. The Panthers’ first-line forward has dominated almost the entire League in his 22-season career, averaging at least a point per game against 23 of the 30 current NHL teams. Jagr will try for a three-game point streak when the Panthers host the New York Rangers, who he has 87 points (28 goals, 59 assists) and 231 shots on goal against in 69 games. The veteran forward has 11 (five goals, six assists) of his 15 points this season in eight home games.

Kevin Shattenkirk, D, St. Louis Blues

DraftKings price: $4,800

It took a few games for Shattenkirk to get going after returning from a lower-body injury on Nov. 7, but the second-unit defenseman is now in the midst of a four-game scoring streak with two goals and three assists over that span. Shattenkirk should be a sound value pick against the visiting Detroit Red Wings as he has 12 points (two goals, 10 assists), 24 blocked shots and 36 shots on goal in 18 career games against Detroit. The veteran blue liner has four (one goal, three assists) of his six points this season in four home games.

Antti Niemi, G, Dallas Stars

DraftKings price: $6,900

The Stars' goaltender combination of Niemi and Kari Lehtonen ($7,100) has appeared in this blog a few times because they remain a solid value selection in all DraftKings contests. Dallas’ League-leading 3.55 goals-for average makes either Dallas goalie likely to earn owners plenty of fantasy points on a given night and they have a good chance at a great game Saturday considering the visiting Buffalo Sabres average 2.62 goals with a 4-3-1 record in eight road games this season. Niemi has been excellent at home this season with a 4-1-0 record, including one shutout and 152 saves on 167 shots in six games played.
