NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -The New Jersey Devils added an experienced defenseman two days before the NHL trade deadline, acquiring Niclas Havelid from the Atlanta Thrashers for rookie defenseman Anssi Salmela.
"Niclas Havelid is a veteran defenseman who brings a wealth of experience to our hockey team," Devils general manager and president Lou Lamoriello said in a statement on Monday.
Havelid has two goals and 13 assists in 63 games this season. In his ninth NHL season, the 35-year old has career totals of 34 goals and 133 assists in 336 games with Anaheim and Atlanta.
Havelid spent nearly four seasons with the Thrashers after being acquired from the Mighty Ducks in 2004. The Swede's best season was in 2002-03 when he had a career-high 11 goals and 33 points. He has seen action in 25 playoff games.
Salmela has split time between New Jersey and Lowell (AHL). He had three assists in 17 games with New Jersey and eight goals and 16 assists in 38 games with Lowell.
