CRANBROOK, B.C. - Defenceman Hayden Rintoul had four assists as the Kootenay Ice hammered the Lethbridge Hurricanes 8-1 Friday in the Western Hockey League opener for both teams.
Max Reinhart scored twice for Kootenay (1-0-0), while Joe Antilla, Dominik Pacovsly, Steele Boomer, Kevin King, Jesse Ismond and Drew Czerwonka also scored.
Cam Braes scored the only goal for Lethbridge (0-1-0) with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
The game marked the debut for Lethbridges new head coach-GM Rich Preston who last coached in the WHL with Regina from 1995-97. He spent the last 12 years as an NHL assistant coach with Calgary and San Jose.
Because of renovations at their home rink, Lethbridge is starting the season with eight straight road games.
Nathan Lieuwen made 13 saves for Kootenay.
Michael Tadjdeh made 28 saves on 33 shots for Lethbridge before being replaced by Ville Kolpannen, who made 12 saves on 15 shots in relief.
