SAGINAW, Mich. - Jack Combs goal at 18:02 of double overtime gave the Saginaw Spirit a thrilling 6-5 win over the Guelph Storm on Saturday night and a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Ontario Hockey League Western Conference quarter-final series.
The lead changed hands four times in regulation as the Storm outshot the Spirit 74-53 in the longest game in Saginaw Spirit history.
Combs, who had a three-point night with two goals and an assist, was one of four Spirit players with multiple points.
Joe Pleckaitis had three assists, and Kyle Bochek and Tyler Murovich each had a goal and an assist. Tyler Murovich and Jordan Skellett rounded out the scoring for Saginaw.
Matt Kennedy led the way for Guelph with two goals and an assist while Brandon Buck, Denis Hollenstein, and Yves Bastien each had a goal and an assist.
Edward Pasqulae stopped 69 of 74 shots for Saginaw and Brandon Foote made 47 saves for the Storm.
The series will now switch to Guelph on Sunday for game two.
