John Collins, the NHL's chief operating officer of business & media, was named Executive of the Year at the 8th Annual American Business Awards, presented Monday night in New York City. The American Business Awards are the only national, all-encompassing awards program honoring great performances in business.
Collins, who has been with the League since 2007 and the COO since August of 2008, is the man behind the NHL's recent surge in business, media and communications. His work led to the NHL receiving record numbers across all media platforms during the 2010 regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final was the most watched NHL game in the United States in 36 years and the most watched Final game between two U.S. teams ever in Canada. The Stanley Cup ranked as the No. 1 trending topic worldwide on Twitter through the end of Game 6 on June 9. Video starts on NHL.com during the playoffs rose 161 percent from last year and unique visitors to the site were up 17 percent.
Behind Collins' push, the NHL Winter Classic has become a staple on the New Year's Day sports calendar and the NHL Network has been a success in the United States.
