DETROIT (AP) -Chris Chelios finally is retiring at the age of 48 after 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cups.

The longest-tenured defenseman in league history made the announcement at a news conference in Detroit on Tuesday. He says he's "been dreading this day for a long time."

Chelios won three Norris Trophies during a career that included stops in Montreal, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta.

The Red Wings say Chelios will as serve as an adviser to hockey operations with the team. His new job will include working with Detroit's front office and coaching staffs and providing his thoughts on a range of on-ice issues while helping to develop and mentor young players within the organization.
