Caps defenceman Orpik suffers knee injury, is questionable for Winter Classic @NHLdotcom

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals could be without Brooks Orpik for the Winter Classic.

Orpik injured his right knee Monday night against the New York Islanders, and Capitals coach Barry Trotz called the veteran defenceman's participation in Thursday's showcase game against Chicago a game-time decision.

Orpik said he was feeling better Tuesday, but added the injury was much more painful than previous knee problems.

He said he'd be disappointed to miss the game against the Blackhawks, which would be his fourth outdoors after playing three with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

If Orpik isn't healthy, Nate Schmidt is expected to play and the Capitals could recall Steve Oleksy as a seventh defenceman.
