Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen each had two assists and Braden Holtby stopped 19 of 21 shots in the Washington Capitals' 5-2 preseason win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Verizon Center on Sunday.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jason Chimera opened the scoring for the Capitals, who finished the preseason 5-3-0. Troy Brouwer, Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich (shorthanded) scored in the second period.

"It was probably the closest look we've had to a full lineup," Orpik said. "We got a few guys still banged up, so that's usually the case all throughout the season, but you can kind of see a little more chemistry tonight, a little more comfort with certain guys, as opposed to previous games."

Jiri Tlusty and John-Michael Liles each had a power-play goal for the Hurricanes (2-5-0).

"We've got to take a step back here, and [Monday] is a scheduled day off, and it will probably stay that way," Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. "To a man, they understand that was not good enough, not even close. It is unacceptable."

Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner left the game with an upper-body injury and did not return.

The Capitals begin the regular season Thursday at home against the Montreal Canadiens. The Hurricanes open against the New York Islanders on Friday at PNC Arena.
