Broncos withstand late rally, hold on to beat Warriors 6-5 @NHLdotcom

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - The Moose Jaw Warriors scored three times in a 2:16 span late in the third period but the Swift Current Broncos held on for a 6-5 season-opening win in Western Hockey League action Friday.

Matt MacKay made it a one goal game with 1:09 left in regulation when he banged home a loose puck during a goal mouth scramble, but the Warriors could not complete the comeback after a slow start.

Swift Current scored four times in the opening period and then played a defensively to earn the narrow victory.

Cody Eakin led all scorers with two goals and an assist, including scoring the eventual game winner with 5:34 left in the third period.

Swift Current (1-0-0) also had multiple point games from Geordie Wudrick and Brad Hoban, who opened the season with a goal and an assist each. Overage veterans Eric Doyle and Michael Stickland both scored once in the win.

Moose Jaw (0-1-0) also had a pair of goals from overage forward Jason Bast, and power-play goals from Thomas Frazee and Spencer Edwards.

Broncos netminder Morgan Clark earned the win by turning aside 24 of 29 shots.

Warriors goaltender Jeff Bosch yielded five goals on 24 shots. Brandon Glover saw 3:53 of action to close the opening period, and he turned aside both shots he faced.

Both teams went two for six on the power play.
