Brodeur to start for Devils against Islanders

by Mike G. Morreale /

ISLANDERS (0-0-0) at DEVILS (0-1-0)

Season series: The Islanders won 3-1 at Prudential Center in the final meeting in 2012-13 to take the series, 3-2. Josh Bailey, Travis Hamonic and John Tavares scored for the Islanders, and Evgeni Nabokov made 24 saves. The Islanders went on to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the Devils missed the postseason for the second time in three seasons.

Big story: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur is scheduled to get the start after sitting out the season opener Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a 3-0 loss for Cory Schneider. It marked the first time since 1993-94 that Brodeur didn't start in the opening game of the season. Schneider made 18 saves in his New Jersey debut; he was acquired by the Devils at the 2013 NHL Draft on June 30 in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks.

Team Scope:

Islanders: It appears Kyle Okposo will open the season on a line with Matt Moulson and captain John Tavares. Okposo, a 25-year-old wing and 2006 first-round pick (No. 7), could thrive on the top unit. He had four goals and 24 points in 48 games in 2012-13 and could be in line to top his career-high for points in a season (2009-10; 19 goals, 52 points). His career high for goals (24) was in 2011-12.

Devils: Jaromir Jagr (lower body soreness) and Patrik Elias (groin) played against the Penguins. Jagr, who skated with Adam Henrique and Travis Zajac, logged 15:40 of ice time and took one shot. Elias, who centered Ryane Clowe and Damien Brunner, generated two shots in 16:12 of ice time. Brunner led the team with eight shots on goal, but no other player on the roster had more than three.

In order to make room for Elias, who was on injured reserve, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello placed defenseman Alexander Urbom on waivers; he was claimed by the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

Henrique had the best opportunity to deny goalie Marc-Andre Fleury the shutout, but his penalty shot with 3:59 left in the third period was stopped with the right pad.

Injury report: There are no injuries to report for the Devils. … The Islanders will be without forward Cal Clutterbuck (leg laceration), who skated with his teammates Thursday but remains three weeks away from returning. Defenseman Travis Hamonic (head) is day-to-day.
