MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Matt Duchesne scored twice and the Brampton Battalion inched closer to first in the Eastern Conference by beating the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 3-1 Monday in Ontario Hockey League play.

The 18-year-old Duchesne, a native of Peterborough, Ont., scored a short-handed goal in the second period and then added his second of the game and 29th of the season early in the third as the Battalion (38-16-1-1), moved two points back of the Belleville Bulls for first in the conference.

"It was important for us to win because we're close to Belleville and we want home-ice advantage in the playoffs," said Duchesne. "We're going to need to win every game to do that. We're not going to let up."

Thomas Stajan also scored for the Battalion, which has a game in hand on the Bulls in the standings.

Jordan Mayer replied for the Majors (31-23-1-2), who saw a five-game winning streak come to an end. The Majors have lost all six meetings with the Battalion this season.

Mississauga goaltender Chris Carrozzi turned in a solid effort as he stopped 37 of 40 shots. Brampton goalie Thomas McCollum made 24 saves.
