CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Blackhawks have their longest winning streak of
the season thanks to an unorthodox goal by Tuomo Ruutu.
Ruutu knocked in his own rebound four minutes into overtime to give Chicago
a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday, extending the Blackhawks' winning
streak to a three games.
Ruutu took a pass from Tyler Arnason in the slot and took a shot that was
blocked by Boston goaltender Andrew Raycroft. The rebound popped up and Ruutu,
with defenseman Patrice Bergeron on his back, knocked it in with the shaft of
``It rebounded off my stick and I was able to tap it in,'' Ruutu said.
Raycroft wasn't sure how the puck went in the goal.
``It came off my glove and kind of went up in the air,'' he said. ``I don't
know if it went off of him or he batted it. I don't know what happened, it just
kept going in.''
Blackhawks rookie goaltender Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots for his fourth
victory this season (4-12-0).
Chicago's Bryan Berard scored a power-play goal with 8:56 remaining in
regulation to tie the game.
``I've gotten to practice with the power-play,'' Berard said. ``Guys are
looking for me. I've been able to capitalize on my chances.''
With Boston's Joe Thornton sitting for tripping, Alex Zhamnov won the
faceoff back to Berard. Berard's slap shot from 35 feet beat Raycroft on the
Thornton wasn't happy about being in the penalty box when the tying goal was
``I've already said things about the officials in the past, and I think
maybe it's not their fault anymore,'' Thornton said. ``Maybe it's (NHL vice
president of operations) Colin Campbell telling them not to call dives
The Bruins lost for the second time in their last eight games (6-2-0-2).
Both losses came in overtime. Boston is 2-2-0-2 on its current seven-game road
P.J. Axelsson opened the scoring at 1:11 of the second period. Axelsson
capitalized on a two-on-one breakaway, faking a pass to Brian Rolston and
lifting a backhanded shot between goaltender Craig Anderson and the right post.
Chicago was 1-for-6 on the power play, failing to register a shot on goal
during a double-minor to Axelsson 11 seconds into the third.
